“From Well to Wheel”: HYNAT and HYTRA aim to bring the market access to clean energy
A partnership to deliver natural hydrogen — one of the most promising energy sources of the decade — from underground to end users, at a cost aligned with fossil fuels
Deep beneath the Kingdom of Morocco, the Sultanate of Oman, and ultimately across five continents, a gas that science is only now rediscovering is continuously forming: natural hydrogen. Unlike “green” or “grey” hydrogen, it requires neither costly electrolysis nor fossil fuel — nature does the work. What remains is to extract it, transport it, and deliver it to those who need it.
This is precisely the ambition of the partnership sealed today by HYNAT, a Geneva-based pioneer in natural hydrogen exploration, and HYTRA, a German-based specialist in the transport and logistics of liquid hydrogen. Together, they intend to build a complete value chain — “from wellhead to wheel” — capable of delivering clean energy at a cost close to that of fossil fuels.
A cost that changes the game
Industry track record gives a sense of the scale of the opportunity: in Mali, the pioneering Hydroma site produces natural hydrogen at around $0.5 per kilogram; several projects under development in Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and America are targeting around $1 per kilogram, depending on reservoir depth and purity — compared with several dollars per kilogram for green or grey hydrogen. HYNAT and HYTRA aim to position themselves within this range by combining upstream exploration with optimised downstream logistics.
A partnership built for strong market value
The hydrogen market has long faced a dilemma: a clean energy source that is expensive and complex to deliver. By combining HYNAT’s exploration and production expertise with HYTRA’s transport, storage and logistics capabilities, this partnership covers the entire value chain within a single, coordinated ecosystem — reducing the friction and risk that today slow large-scale commercialisation.
For investors, this integration offers a single entry point into a resource with a cost-competitiveness potential unique in clean energy. For target markets — the Gulf, Africa, Europe — it provides access to a local, reliable and scalable energy source. By leveraging established infrastructure such as SOHAR Port and Freezone, HYNAT and HYTRA shorten the path from geological discovery to the first molecule delivered to a customer.
Upstream, HYNAT relies on HyDetect, its proprietary exploration method, which breaks with conventional industry approaches: target de-risking begins from the earliest exploration phases, delivering time savings and exploration cost reductions of 50% each compared with conventional methods.
Downstream, HYTRA is developing an innovative liquefaction technology, designed to reduce liquefaction and transport costs to a level unmatched in the industry — completing, at the end of the chain, the cost advantage achieved by HYNAT upstream.
Finally, in Oman, SOHAR Port and Freezone brings infrastructure and expertise that are already operational to implement this breakthrough strategy: an existing port and industrial platform, rather than one still to be built, which accelerates the path from exploration to export.
Oman, the first proving ground
The partnership will take its first concrete form through the natural hydrogen exploration programme led by HYNAT in Oman 2025. HYNAT relies in this context on SOHAR Port and Freezone, a strategic port and industrial platform set to play a key role in logistics and export to international markets.
A shared ambition
Beyond Oman, HYNAT and HYTRA aim to offer the market clean, competitive “door-to-door” energy at a target cost of $1 per kg, positioning natural hydrogen as a credible alternative to fossil fuels.
About HYNAT
Based in Geneva, HYNAT is a company specialising in the exploration and production of natural hydrogen, is expanding its exploration programmes in 7 countries, including Morocco and the Sultanate of Oman.
About SOHAR Port and Freezone
Located in the Sultanate of Oman, SOHAR Port and Freezone is an integrated deep-sea port and industrial hub connecting businesses to regional and global markets. Its established infrastructure and logistics capabilities support diverse industrial and energy value chains and Oman’s sustainable economic development.
About HYTRA
Founded in Germany in 2023 by Paul Louis Kiesow and Christof Schramm, HYTRA develops technologies and infrastructure for the transport, storage and logistics of liquid hydrogen, in support of the global energy transition.
